ok so fun thing I discovered when I accidentally stumbled on an encyclopedia of queer myth today. In classical mythology the star Sirius is linked with “the heat of passion between men and the death of youths loved by the gods”
and i’m not saying this means sirius black is queer
but sirius black is queer
If One Direction doesn’t perform Happily, Through the Dark, and Strong live, I will heave myself on stage and personally sing them until they change the damn set list. They’re not making the Same Mistakes on this damn tour.
but seriously, gale is the woooorst and i understand what is probably his metaphorical function but it doesn’t mean i hate him any less. like. i get that he and peeta represent the opposing views on warfare and katniss’s uncertainty between them is presumably meant to represent her own ongoing conflict and mixed opinions on warfare. and her ‘picking’ peeta at the end of mockingjay while gale is shunted off to district 2 is representative of what she chose wrt war.
but. BUT. if that was suzanne collins’s intent behind the whole love triangle debacle, it was… totally… unnecessary…… like throughout the entire trilogy katniss is constantly struggling to figure out what she believes about violence and warfare. there is seriously no need for there to be further ~metaphorical resonance~ or whatever. it’s the point of the trilogy. it’s spelled out for us very plainly. katniss doesn’t exactly embellish her thoughts lmao
and even without all that (which could quite possibly just be me inventing pointless meaning for this crap), even at its very base as a dumb love triangle in a story that definitely does not need one - gale is poorly characterized, manipulative of katniss, uses ultimatums and guilt trips her for TRYING TO SURVIVE AND PROTECT HER LOVED ONES both in and out of the games. meanwhile, peeta is lovely and super well characterized and is a constant character instead of being absent from the story most of the time like gale.
basically gale’s meaningless as a person and a character and possibly a metaphor or whatever. team peeta. you know in your heart what is right, anon
